Close by, 1300-year old Würzburg, made famous by its fortress and residence, with innumerable churches from all eras – home of Tilman Riemenschneider and Balthasar Neumann. Bamberg – like Rome, sitting astride seven hills – is also close enough for a day trip, with its fascinating Old Town on the River Regnitz against the magnificent backdrop of its cathedral and the Michelsberg Abbey.
